May 10th marked one year since Toronto gained Fair Trade City status. Fair Trade Toronto, the volunteer organization that led the initiative, celebrated the anniversary with a flag raising at City Hall. Of course, HummPIRG exec members were there! It was a beautiful day to be at the City Hall Rotunda! There were delicious fair trade bananas to snack on and lots of fair trade chocolate and coffee. Fair Trade Toronto was a great host! Thanks to Equitas and Caminos for the samples! We heard from some of Toronto's leaders of the fair trade movement. Nadia Berger of Fair Trade Toronto MCed for the event. City Councillor Mike Layton discussed the official designation and the cities part in it.
